Sports Reels

Picture
A sports-themed newsreel series was initiated at Columbia in 1928 with GREAT MOMENTS IN FOOTBALL. A few years later, in
1931, the series FOOTBALL THRILLS appeared. This series would evolve into (and here's where it gets a little confusing) THE WORLD OF SPORTS...and then alternate back-and-forth between NEW SPORT THRILLS, SPORTS THRILLS, SPORT REELS and back to THE WORLD OF SPORTS (which would remain the official name of the series for the rest of it's theatrical run).

During the first 10 years, the series went through a handful of producers (John Bray Productions, Ben Schwalb) and narrators until, in the early 1940's, popular sports columnist Bill Stern took over as commentator, and Harry Foster took over as permanent producer/director.

After 36 years of one-reelers in glorious black and white, a handful of shorts were produced in color, after which the series took it's final bow in 1967.

PLEASE NOTE: Available titles will be in ITALICS and UNDERLINED

If a title is not in ITALICS and UNDERLINED....I do not have it in my collection.
